About the Artist: Aubrey Nations

My journey with art began as soon as I could hold a pencil. At 16, after losing my father, I found refuge in the cozy coffee shop next to my school. It was a place where I could study and create without feeling alone, immersed in the warmth and hum of community. This comforting environment helped me through a difficult time and led me to a unique and expressive medium.

In high school, an art assignment required me to paint with black acrylic ink, a medium I’d never used and initially feared. With no sketching, I painted a silhouette of my little brother and my late father. This act of letting go taught me to embrace imperfection, sparking a creative curiosity to try new techniques. One day, I saw someone online painting with instant espresso and tried it myself. The sticky residue wasn’t what I’d hoped for, but one evening at the coffee shop, I painted with real espresso instead. Coffee, unlike ink, had an unpredictable, rebellious quality; it took patience and adaptability. This challenge felt like a collaboration, as though the coffee itself had become a partner in my creative process.

Falling in Love with the PNW

After moving to Washington in 2020 (just before Covid shut downs) I began to explore the Pacific Northwest and fell deeply in love with its vast forests, rugged coastlines, and towering mountains. The landscapes are truly raw and awe-inspiring. Hiking through misty trails, surrounded by towering trees, I felt more connected to a world that celebrated both beauty and resilience than I ever had before. This connection inspired new dimensions in my art, blending the coffee’s depth with the natural landscapes around me.

The coffee shop atmosphere, the eclectic mix of people and stories, remained an essential part of my journey. Business professionals, influencers, connoisseurs, students, and friends all gathered, each bringing unique energy and purpose to the space. Amid this symphony of life I continue to find inspiration every day to carry forward in my art, drawing from the diversity of people and experiences around me. These places are filled with people on their own journeys, which is a humbling reminder of life’s unpredictable and varied paths.

The Story My Art Tells

Today, my art embodies this blend of art, coffee culture, and the stunning Pacific Northwest. Each piece I create reflects resilience, creativity, and the beauty of life I’ve had the pleasure to experience. My work isn’t just about creating pretty paintings; it’s about capturing the spirit of the PNW, the warmth of the coffee shop, and the stories that shape us. Through my art, I invite others to experience the grounded authenticity and creativity that coffee and nature bring into our lives.
